The ear is a complex organ and an earache may be one of several kinds.  An infection of the middle ear, otitis media, is the most common cause and can be persistent in children.  Orthodox medicine usually treats it with antibiotics if a bacterial cause is suspected.  The pain may be accompanied by fever and deafness.  Always seek medical advice if the pain persists or is intolerable, as the ear drum may be on the point of rupturing.  Homeopathy can be helpful in both acute causes and in the chronic condition.  If the ailment keeps recurring, however, take the child to a qualified homeopath.  Check first to see if there is a foreign body lodged in the ear.  You may need help from a doctor with this.

Aconite - Sudden onset is always a key note of Aconite conditions.  The symptoms are often brought on after being out in the cold.  The child will appear very fearful, the worst time is around midnight and for about 2 hours after.

Hepar sulph - This remedy works better in the middle stages of inflammation, when pus is beginning to build up.  The child may have a sore throat and a cold with thick yellow  - green discharge.  The pain is sharp and the child will feel cross and needs warmth.

Belladonna - Symptoms can come on very quickly, the ear ache is intensely painful; the ear throbs and looks red.  The temperature may be high.

Mercurius - The pain may extend to the throat and mouth, sometimes with a nasal discharge that is yellow and occasionally blood streaked.  The glands in the face and neck may be swollen and hard.  The child is likely to be thirsty and sweaty, and have lots of saliva that smells bad.

Chamomilla - The pain can be excruciating and the child responds by becoming extremely bad tempered.  You may be able to ameliorate this by carrying or rocking the child.  Warmth helps to ease the pain. 

Pulsatilla - The aches may come and go with no pattern to them.  The child is weepy and irritable, but better for affection and sympathy.  The child eels more comfortable if the room is kept cool.

Ferrum phos - The pain comes on gradually and the remedy is best used in the early stages.  Use it if Belladonna has not worked.

Verbascum (Mullein oil) - This is a very helpful and soothing external application.  You can use it in addition to other remedies or by itself.  Apply a few warmed drops in to affected ear.
