Genital
herpes is caused by one of the Herpes simplex viruses (HSV). The
two strains of this virus HSV-1 and HSV-2 can both cause genital herpes,
but HSV-1 is more frequently found in cold sores on the lips and face,
from where it can cause genital sores after oral-genital contact.
