AVIAN (BIRD) FLU AND HOMEOPATHY.....
Its not difficult to find someone these days who is concerned about the possibility of an influenza pandemic throughout the world. Equally common are the theories that abound from a plethora of 'experts' and medical/scientific institutions about its likelihood, the form it might take and the possible levels of devestation that it might reap throughout the animal and human populations.
We have similarly been lead to believe that there are a group of highly effective pharmaceutical drugs that work by reprogramming the behaviour of the virus and thus distorting its progess. As a result there has been massive stockpiling of drugs such as Tamiflu or Relenza and whilst they have not really been tested against the most serious type of Avian Flu, some Japanese and U.S. virologists are already concerned that the virus could become resistent . Both these drugs also act upon some of the symptoms of the flu rather than working as a preventative vaccine.
WHAT CAN WE DO? We firstly need to recognize that any illness, be it viral or bacterial, is opportunistic. In other words, there are certain groups of people who are more susceptible to catching these illnesses or less able to fight off the severe symptoms or secondary bacterial infections that can result. We are warned that the elderly, the very young or those with pre existing illnesses that may compromise their immune response such as severe asthmatics or those dependent on strong medications. Understanding what is flu and what is a common cold is important. Flu is usually characterised by severe aches/pains/headaches. There is often a profound tiredness and chest problems which can move from persistent or severe coughs to serious bronchitis or (life threatening for some) pneumonia.
It is, therefore important to keep as well and as fit as possible. It is a good reason to seriously consider quitting smoking for good, reducing our alcohol and processed food intake and addressing the stress levels that so often leave us open to illness.
WHAT ABOUT HOMEOPATHY? Like many of the Natural Therapies, Homeopathy addresses many of the typical symptoms of Influenza, by stimulating the body's own immune system to challenge a viral or bacterial infection to which it is exposed. It is the strength of that response that will determine either our vulnerablility or our capacity to fight off the worst that a serious flu can create.
